Dear Brothers & Sisters,
This Gospel passage follows on from last Sunday’s where Jesus promises to build his Church on Peter and, by extension, all who like Peter say that Jesus is the Christ by the way they live. Today he told the disciples and tells us that the Christ has to suffer and conquer death by his dying and rising so that nothing can conquer the love of God for all that He has made.
What we are meant to learn today is that God’s way is not our way. Our way of thinking and behaving and loving is conditioned by others’ responses. God’s love is unconditional. Absolutely nothing separates us from His life. Not even death, like the killing of his only begotten Son, the Christ, changes that love.
Our response? Gratitude for such divine love and loving that lover in return.
