“ON THIS ROCK I WILL BUILD MY CHURCH.”
Dear Brothers & Sisters,
We have transferred the Solemnity of Peter and Paul to today because it always falls on the 29th June each year. Since yesterday was the 29th it’s appropriate to celebrate it today. Today, therefore, we celebrate Peter and Paul because Jesus chose to build his church on them. The words quoted in the text were addressed to Peter. Note that Paul was not yet in the picture but was later told that Jesus would use him to bring his Name to the Gentiles.
These two great Saints, while enjoying being chosen by Christ himself as foundations on which the church is built, have left us an example. We too have to let the Father reveal his Son to us through the Holy Spirit. When that happens, we too like Peter will acclaim Jesus is the Bristol. And when we proclaim him as such he will, build his church on us. It will be said to us, “On this rock I will build my church.”
