Dear Sisters and Brothers,
“This text is being fulfilled even as you listen.”
Today we are being told that when we listen to the Word of the Lord, it becomes real and impacts on our life. To listen is to pay attention to what we are hearing. In this case, it is to allow what we hear to speak directly to us and take root in our hearts. The fact that we and countless others hear the Word of God weekly, if not daily, and still there are too many poor, destitute people, persons who are alienated and suffering, says that many of us are hearing but not actually listening. For if we are listening then the very text today will be fulfilled in us.
But did we listen to the text?
Can we say like Jesus in the text, “This text is being fulfilled even as you listen.”
Let’s listen to the text again.
“The spirit of the Lord has been given to me,
for he has anointed me.
He has sent me to bring the good news to the poor,
to proclaim liberty to captives
and to the blind new sight,
to set the downtrodden free,
to proclaim the Lord’s year of favour.”
Repeat after me. This text is being fulfilled even as we listen.
